Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. Scoliosis has many causes, including:
- Congenital – This occurs when the bones or vertebrae of the spine are malformed causing the spine to deviate from the mid-line.
- Neuromuscular – This is caused by poor muscle control or weakness, or paralysis from diseases such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, polio or spina bifida. Neurological stress to the central nervous system can also create muscular problems pulling the spine into an abnormal position.
- Idiopathic – This is used to describe a scoliosis that has an unknown cause.
Scoliosis can cause back pain and fatigue, and over time will lead to increased degeneration or osteoarthritis of the spinal joints. Any type of misalignment in the spine can cause irritation and stress to the nerves, and therefore will predispose the person to other potential health problems. If a scoliosis becomes too severe, it can physically compromise the internal organs.
Being evaluated by a multidisciplinary approach is vital to determining the cause of the scoliosis and most importantly deciding on the best treatment to manage and prevent it from worsening. This usually includes a combination of physical therapy, chiropractic, bracing and home exercise program.
